Well, last week was tough, between returning to a pretty boring virtual orientation, to dealing with a bug problem, to continued Pandemic issues, to race riots and curfews all over the nation. This is when living in the middle of the Pacific on an island is a blessing, because we feel pretty far from it all. There were some peaceful protests in Waikiki, but nothing like what was happening in San Diego, Minneapolis, and DC. There are some tough feelings out there and everyone is feeling more deeply lately and we have more time to process which is good. We weren't really paying much attention to it earlier in the week because we woke up Monday morning with little tiny bugs all over our phones and then they started biting me and crawling on me and they were everywhere in our master bedroom. We thought they were bed bugs which scared the heck out of me, but it turned out they were mites brought in from the birds nest in the eave outside our bedroom window. We were washing everything in HOT water, vacuuming them up every other minute, I was waking up at 2 am to scrub off in the shower because I couldn't sleep! Thank goodness we got pest control out here relatively quickly (after we found out our property manager wasn't working for Hawaii Life anymore). The owners are now paying for the pest control and the removal of the birds nests and some bird prevention additions. Don't get me wrong, I am a bird lover and I was trying to be nice to them, but when I nearly got eaten alive because of them, I am okay with them being removed! I am still itching a week later, but we think they are all gone and we think that nightmare is over! Shooooo! Now, if only the race inequalities and pandemic could be fixed in a week, that sure would be nice!
